Scan a document to PDF without a scanner
You don't need a bulky flatbed scanner to digitize your paperwork. Your smartphone camera, combined with the right software, is more than capable of creating professional-grade PDF documents.
How to scan with Editrix PDF
Editrix uses advanced machine learning to automatically detect document edges, correct perspective, and enhance the text.
- Open Editrix PDF and select the Scan to PDF tool.
- Point your camera at the document. The app will automatically find the edges and capture the page.
- Keep capturing if you have multiple pages.
- Save the result. You now have a clean, cropped, multi-page PDF.
Getting a scan that looks scanned, not photographed
The difference between a usable scan and an obvious phone snap is mostly lighting and angle, and both are easy to get right:
- Even light beats bright light. Overhead light directly above the page casts your own shadow across it. Near a window, with the page turned toward the light, works better than any lamp.
- Put the page on a contrasting surface. Edge detection finds the boundary between page and background - white paper on a white desk is the one case that reliably confuses it.
- Shoot square-on and let the app correct the rest. Perspective correction handles a moderate angle, but it cannot recover text that motion blur has already destroyed.
- Flatten folded documents first. A curved page distorts the text in a way no post-processing can fully undo.
Make the scan searchable
A scan is an image. The words in it are pixels, so you cannot search, select or copy them - which is usually discovered later, when you need to find one receipt among fifty.
Running OCR on the result adds a text layer behind the image: the page looks identical, but the words become selectable and searchable. Editrix does this on-device too, with models for Latin, Devanagari, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Accuracy depends heavily on the scan quality, which is the practical reason the lighting advice above is worth two minutes.
Keep the file a sensible size
Scans are images, and images are where PDF size comes from - a few pages can easily reach tens of megabytes, which is exactly what upload limits reject. If you need to email or submit a scan, run it through compression afterwards; scanned documents shrink more than any other kind of PDF, because they are almost entirely image data.
When another tool is better
If you are digitising thousands of pages, buy a dedicated sheet-fed scanner - the bottleneck is paper handling, not image quality. For receipts, forms, homework and the occasional contract, your phone is genuinely enough.
